My review of Thomas Trofimuk's Saudade is available at the Ottawa Review of Books
I really, really liked this surreal, cinematic, mystery about the nature or memory and the need to attend to everything all the time because this moment is all we have.
I particularly liked the surprise ending, which I didn't see coming until the last few chapters. But then I forced the book on my daughter, who literally read only the first page before saying, "Does it end with ___". Yes, yes it did. So your mileage may vary re "surprise", but the writing here is quite exceptional, so still highly recommended.
